Travis
Sorokie was born in 1973 in Sauk Rapids, MN to Bill and Evora
Sorokie
(2 of his biggest fans and supporters).
Travis attended his first drag race in 1977 (Minnesota Dragways),
and got to sit behind the wheel of Don
"the Snake" Prudhomme's Army Funny Car.
This was the thrill of a lifetime and started his "wheels
turning."
In 1989, while in High school, he assisted his racing mentor
Alan Dancer, and his family's racing Team (which consisted
of Al's wife, Nancy's 1967 Oldsmobile F-85 as well). Alan
had just built a shiny new 1967 Chevelle named "Old Habits,"
named after a Hank Williams Jr. song. Halfway through that
first season, Alan pretty much allowed Travis to dial-in Nancy's
car (they ended up winning 3 races that season...two with
Nancy's car, and one with Alan's).
After graduating High school in 1991, Travis went on to
college and played baseball...but always found himself at
home for the summer racing season. Juggling amateur baseball
and thoughts of racing, he bought his first race car (a 1969
Chevy Nova) in 1994.
He played amateur baseball until 1996, then decided to focus
instead on drag racing. By this time, Alan had retired from
racing, due to a back injury (he was shot out of a helicopter
in Viet Nam). Travis had run the Nova for a few years with
limited success, but was having fun and learning along the
way.
At the end of the 1996 season, he sold his trusty Nova to
Wisconsin Stock Eliminator racer Bill Shepard. In turn, he
made a quick phone call to Alan Dancer to see if the Chevelle
he had parked for the past few years was, by chance, for sale.
Well, it was...and the rest, they say, is history.
Travis' first season behind the wheel of "Old Habits" was
incredible. Their first race brought them to semi-finals,
and the next two to VICTORY. Travis and Old Habits picked
up yet another win at the end of the season to earn the 1997
MDRA Pro E.T. Championship.
Travis admits that he has always loved Super Stock racing. Ever since the first drag race his folks took him to, it has always been his favorite sportsman catagory. That being said, it is also one of the most expensive to run and because of that, he left the idea of owning a Super Stock car to a dream. When an opportunity to purchase a
former National Event winning car at very reasonable price presented itself, the decision was simple. Travis had the opportunity to finally pursue his dream!
In April of 2006 "Old Habits Racing" expanded its team by adding a 1985 Chevy Camaro formerly owned by Dan Larson.
With Dan as the driver, the car compiled 19 NHRA Class Wins (including Indy 3 times) as well as a National Event victory in Topeka, KS. Due to health reasons Dan made the decision to sell the car to Travis; a very successful local Bracket racer with a dream.
At this season's Lucas Oil Nationals held in Brainerd, MN, Travis Sorokie drove to yet another Class Win behind the wheel of his new Super Stock Camaro. With the tuning help of Ron "The Professor" Zenzen and consultation services still provided from Dan Larson, 2007 is looking to be a break out year for "Old Habits Racing." |
